Single-chip 10GBase-T PHY features low power

Source: | Publishing Date:2008-04-24

Chip takes just 6 W max and can drive 10 G over CAT-6A cable for 100 m

Fully compliant to 100/1G/10GBase-T standards (802-3an-2006) and said to be the industry’s first low-power single-chip solution, the SFT9001 PHY consumes less than 6 W max in full 10-G operation. The device comes in a 12 x 21-mm package and yields a 100-m reach on Cat-6A cabling.

The IC enables high-density 10-GbE switches with up to 48 ports in a 1-RU form factor. It is said to be the first 10GBase-T PHY to support WOL, an Ethernet standard that allows a server to be awakened remotely by the network. Power draw in WOL mode is hundreds of milliwatts. A companion SFC4000E vNIC controller IC consumes less than 2.2 W. (Less than $100 ea/sample qty—samples in May.)
