An earthquake will increase the price? Beware of the speculative behavior of components!

Update:2021-09-02 Views:5856

Taiwan is an important base for the global electronics industry. Every time a geological disaster occurs, the sound of "component price increases" will be heard...

On April 18, an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 occurred near Hualien County, Taiwan (24.13 degrees north latitude and 121.52 degrees east longitude).
Although TSMC, Innolux and other companies have officially responded “unaffected” for the first time (specific reports: Taiwan’s sudden magnitude 6.7 earthquake, TSMC, Innolux and other official responses), but online has rumored that “the earthquake or The news that the price of some components has risen has caused panic in the industry.

Even some people on the Internet are deliberately speculating about the false news that the Taiwan electronics industry production base is affected by the earthquake, in an attempt to speculate on the price of electronic products.

Last February, there was an earthquake in Hualien County. After the earthquake, there has been a surge in product prices in the semiconductor market, including capacitors, resistors, discrete devices, and diodes. The market is still memorable, so there will be speculations this time.

In addition, at the time of the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck southern Taiwan in 2016, many electronic component parks in Taiwan were completely shut down, which had a major impact on the entire electronic components industry.

It is no exaggeration to say that as soon as there is news of the earthquake in Taiwan, the component market will immediately shroud in the shadow of "price hikes."

However, according to international electronic business observations, from the performance of Taiwan's electronic stocks, there has not been a significant drop. At the time of publication, no Taiwanese companies issued relevant price increase notices. The "component price increase" message rumored on the Internet is more like speculation.

Some industry analysts said that because TSMC's production base is not located in the earthquake zone, production has not been affected. Although it cannot be ruled out that other semiconductor manufacturers are affected, TSMC will not be affected by the earthquake, CPU, graphics card, mobile phone processor, etc. The product is not likely to be out of stock and price increases.
In addition to earthquakes, security incidents, typhoons, power outages, etc. will also become "reasons" for Taiwan's component price increases.

In January of this year, sources from the supply chain said that a wafer contamination incident occurred at TSMC Nanke Fab (specific report: TSMC scrapped tens of thousands of wafers and lost more than 10 million US dollars!). Then the "price increase" was heard. At present, there is no actual case support, and the rumors are not broken.

In 2017, "815 Taiwan's blackout" also frightened Taiwan's semiconductor industry. At that time, two typhoons landed in Taiwan, and a transmission tower in Yilan Dong'ao was blown down by the typhoon, causing Taiwan's power supply to be tight, and a power shortage occurred. In the production process, once the chip is powered off, it means that all the wafers on the production line may be scrapped. At that time, the sound of component price increases was also rumored.

In the 2015 Kaohsiung earthquake in Taiwan, TSMC Zhongke and Nanke Plants stopped production, resulting in a 10% to 20% increase in global logic chip prices. Similarly, after the explosion of the second largest chip manufacturer Hynix in Wuxi, the global memory chip price jumped 25% in an instant... These examples show that under the natural disasters and man-made disasters, the semiconductor industry will also have a fragile side. However, whether the components increase in price, but also pay attention to the original source of information, warned the profiteers to take the opportunity to speculate!
