The MB88388A controller is presented as the industry¡¯s first device to support vehicle navigation imaging using the IDB-1394 standard for in-vehicle multimedia networks. It implements the proprietary SmartCODEC video codec that can compress and decompress high-resolution video with latencies of only 2 to 3 ms¡ªmuch faster than the video frame rate.

Combining the MB88388A with the MB88389 IC for IDB-1394-compliant audio, realizes a high-quality rear-seat entertainment system. Because IDB-1394 can be configured as a multiplexing network, multiple video and audio streams can be transmitted simultaneously over the same physical layer, with reduced wiring-harness complexity/weight.
