Two additions to the PolyZen line of polymer-enhanced precision zener diode micro-assemblies provide a 2.3-A hold current—higher than previous versions—to protect circuits in GPSs, smart phones, game consoles, portable media players, and other video-based peripherals that can be charged in the car. The Zener diode provides voltage clamping and a resistively nonlinear PPTC layer that responds to either diode heating or overcurrent events by transitioning from a low- to a high-resistance state.

The devices can withstand the high inrush currents and faults associated with the new technology, and are available in a small form factor that is suitable for PMPs.
