Interfacing directly to a microprocessor, transmissive and reflective devices measure with separate red, green, blue, and clear sensor channels

The smallest devices of their kind available today, the surface-mount ADJD-S311 and ADJD-S371 digital RGBC sensors are designed for use in small portable electronics such as cell phones, MP3 players, PDAs, handheld games, and other consumer and measurement applications. Able to measure transmissive or reflective color and brightness, the sensors can be used by engineers to easily and flexibly design in automatic display adjustment as well as other advanced features.

Measuring just 2.2 x 2.2 x 0.76 mm, the S311 is a transmissive-sensing CMOS IC with 10-bit resolution on four channels: red, green, blue, and clear (RGBC), while the 3.9 x 4.5 x 1.8-mm S371 adds a white LED to create the industry’s first reflective digital RCBC-sensing module. Capable of directly interfacing via a two-wire serial interface to a microprocessor, both devices provide independent gain selection for each channel, operate from a 2.5-V supply, and consume 2 μA typ in sleep mode.

To simplify design-in, a development kit that interfaces to a PC’s USB port provides necessary tools and software, including a graphical user interface with displays of registers, output digital readings, white calibration, standard-color-format conversion, and data log.
