Sharp LCD TV out to transform living spaces

Pursuing its focus on the development of next-generation TVs that transform living room spaces, Sharp Corp. announced it has developed a prototype LCD TV that excels in image quality, thin-profile design and environment friendliness.

As the world gradually shifts to digital broadcasting, demand for LCD TVs is growing steadily on a global scale. Features such as thin profile, high-resolution image display and low power consumption make LCD TVs attractive, both as primary TVs in living rooms and as personal TVs in private spaces.

At the same time, as broadcasting and communications shift to digital, a platform is now in place that provides viewers easy access to noise-free, high-definition video. This has raised the expectations of consumers who in the future will be seeking even higher image quality, larger screen sizes, completely new designs that will revolutionize living spaces, and advanced environment friendliness.

Sharp's LCD TV prototype has a thickness of 20mm for the main display section (29mm at the thickest part), weight of 25kg and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. Color reproducibility is 150 percent of NTSC color gamut. The prototype has a power consumption of 140kWh/year in a 50-inch class TV. This annual power consumption estimate is calculated according to the Energy Conservation Law based on screen size and type of receiver, and standardized to the 4.5hr average daily viewing time of a typical household.
