Samsung has set up Sensor Business to grab the mobile phone photo market with Sony
A new 48-megapixel mobile phone has been exposed recently. It was previously reported that the image sensor it used was Sony IMX 586.48 megapixels, but the latter was launched by Huawei Nova 4. It may use Samsung ISOCELL GM1 sensor, which is also 48 megapixels. Samsung and Sony compete in the sensor market. Now Samsung has formally set up a sensor business group, which is in charge of CIS image sensor business of Samsung LSI business. Samsung is second only to Sony in this field, but its market share is quite different from Sony's. The latter is almost a dominant company.
Mobile devices are currently the largest market for CIS sensors, but demand for CIS image sensors will continue to grow in the next few years. According to TSR statistics, the global CIS market size in 2017 is US$11.688 billion, of which Sony ranks first with revenue of US$6.02 billion, with market share exceeding 51%, Samsung Electronics ranks second with revenue of US$2.45 billion and market share 20.9%. From this, we can see the gap between Samsung and Sony, especially Sony Sensors, which firmly grasps the high-end market, whether Apple or Huawei. Even Samsung's high-end mobile phones are using Sony's CIS sensors.
The project leader of Samsung CIS group is Park Yongren, director of System LSI development room. He joined Samsung LSI division in 2014. He has worked in LG, TI and other companies before. After joining Samsung, he mainly devoted himself to sensor development.
