Light-management IC provides >90% efficiency
The MAX8830 LED light-management IC in a 2.5 x 2.5-mm UCSP package integrates a dc/dc step-up converter, four current regulators for display backlighting, a camera-flash current regulator, and all power switches. The >90% efficient device suits cellular handsets, wireless PDAs, and smart phones.
The chip includes four 10-mA current regulators that drive LEDs in display-backlighting applications. LED brightness is individually adjustable in 32 steps through the I2C interface. The IC integrates a 75-mV, 200-mA low-dropout flash current regulator that can be programmed for 16 levels of current. A 280-mA step-up converter integrates a switching MOSFET and a synchronous rectifier. The 1-MHz switching frequency allows the use of inductors as small as 2 uH.
