Renesas Technology Releases R61517 Single-Chip TFT Color LCD Controller-Driver for Mobile Phones with Wide QVGA Size Display and Backlight Control Function
Tokyo, November 15, 2007 −− Renesas Technology Corp. today announced the R61517, a single-chip LCD controller-driver that supports amorphous wide QVGA (WQVGA: 240 x 432 pixels) size TFT color LCD modules. The R61517 further expands the company's lineup of LCD controller-drivers for mobile devices such as mobile phone handsets. Sample shipments will begin on November 16th in Japan.
< Product Background >
In recent years services and functions supporting multimedia applications such as mobile TV and video recording and playback have been proliferating rapidly in the mobile phone market. At the same time, video displays are becoming more diverse and varied, and demand is increasing for smooth, high-speed display of moving pictures and screens that are both larger and higher in definition.
On the other hand, increasing the screen size or increasing the definition tends to reduce the battery drive duration. As a result, there is strong market demand for LCD display modules that combine large screen size and high resolution with reduced power consumption and improved picture quality.
Renesas Technology has previously released the R61509, a single-chip TFT color LCD controller-driver supporting high-definition images and WQVGA size displays. The new R61517 single-chip TFT LCD controller-driver responds to growing market demand, as described above, by adding a backlight controller to reduce the power consumption of the LCD module and providing a command format compatible with the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface)*1 instruction set as the system interface with the MCU.
< Product Features >
The R61517 is a single-chip LCD controller-driver that supports WQVGA screen size with a maximum of 240 x 432 pixels and display of approximately 260,000 colors.
(1) | Support for WQVGA size displays and gamma adjustment function for excellent picture quality |
The R61517 implements single-chip support for WQVGA size screens, which have a 16:9 aspect ratio suitable for mobile TV displays, thereby helping to reduce the cost of the LCD module. It also has an on-chip RGB independent gamma adjustment function that allows setting of separate gradation generation circuits for red (R), green (G), and blue (B). This enables fine-grained adjustment of RGB gradations to match the color characteristics of the LCD panel or compensate for changes in picture quality due to external lighting. This contributes to excellent color reproduction and superior display quality.
(2) | Backlight control function for approximately 30% reduction in power consumption of LCD module |
The R61517 has an on-chip backlight control (BLC) function. It automatically senses the type of image content being displayed and dynamically controls the backlight brightness and corresponding control data processing to match. Control is performed without having to forcibly change the -curve, based on the image data brightness information. This avoids adverse effects from changes in the picture quality. The result is a reduction in the power consumption of the LCD module overall while maintaining high picture quality. For example, the overall power consumption of the LCD module when displaying video content is reduced a maximum of 50%, and about 30% on average, in comparison with earlier Renesas products. The reduction in power consumption helps increase the maximum mobile TV viewing duration. A portion of the image data processing circuit used to implement the BLC function was developed in collaboration with Hitachi, Ltd.
(3) | MIPI interface |
The R61517 employs an MIPI interface as the system interface with the MCU. It conforms to MIPI-DCS (Display Command Set) and supports MIPI DBI Type B (18-/16-/9-/8-bit), MIPI DBI Type C (Option 1 and Option 3), and MIPI-DPI (Display Pixel Interface). This interface makes implementation and design of software and hardware easier than with earlier Renesas products. It increases the reusability and compatibility of mobile device development resources and helps to shorten the time required for development. |
Functions are also provided for reducing power consumption, including an eight-color display function and a power management function. These are ideal for applications requiring extended battery drive durations, such as digital mobile phones with color displays, multimedia players, and mobile TV terminals.
The R61517 is supplied in a COG*2 package, enabling direct face-down mounting on the glass panel.
Renesas Technology plans to continue extending its lineup of LCD controller-drivers by developing new products with support for even larger screen sizes.
Notes: | 1. | MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) is an open interface standard for mobile application processors promoted by the MIPI Alliance, a non-profit standardization organization established by ARM Ltd., Nokia Corporation, STMicroelectronics N.V., and Texas Instruments Incorporated. |
2. | COG (Chip On Glass): A mounting method in which a chip with gold bumps is directly mounted face-down on the LCD glass substrate. |
